This Chicken Lived For 18 Months Without A Head

Ever heard of a chicken that survived for anything more than 10 seconds after its head was chopped off? Well, one chicken did - for 18 months! And as is obvious, it was nothing short of a miracle! Every year, in May, Colorado celebrates Mike The Headless Chicken Festival to remember the miracle that had taken place 17 years ago, when a Colorado farmer chopped off a chicken's head, and yet it managed to live for another 18 months!

On 10 September, 1945, Lloyd Olsen and his wife butchered over 50 animals, and yet, one of them didn't die!

And here's the pressing question: How did it not die?

According to Lloyd, the chicken resisted, bolted, and ran away!

Lloyd tried to take the chicken to the market and sell it.

But he did know how to take advantage of the situation! He was carried the chicken in a horse wagon, and began betting people that he had a live headless chicken in it!

The news of the existence of a headless chicken spread like a wildfire!

It even reached the papers!

But the question remains: how did it survive? Well, here's how.

Mike's brain stem was still intact, and as it so happens, the brain stem is the main part of the bird's brain. So, the brain stem basically represented the entire brain, and thus allowed him to function fully, even without a head!

Mike The Headless Chicken Festival is celebrated every 2nd week of May at Fruita, Colorado.
